What exactly can a penny buy these days? This is a question often asked. Google the question and you will find a few answers. Not much, apparently, according to most. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when I actually set out to make purchases for one cent. This blog documents the various items I scored for a penny or less.

What qualifies a purchase as a penny loot? The cost of anything mentioned in this blog includes the purchase price, tax, shipping and handling fee, if any. If a rebate is involved, the postage to mail it is part of the cost. If a coupon is bought and used in the deal, that figures into the total as well. And the total cost must be equal to or less than US$0.01. The item must also be procured from a source available to the public - "My aunt gave me a sweater" doesn't count.

Some costs are not included in the one cent total. Chief among them is the time and effort to hunt for and complete the deals. Gas and mileage is not counted if a trip to the store is required. Computer and office equipment amortization, paper and ink expenditures are all excluded.

As expected, quite a few of the items I bought came from China. Depending on your tastes and needs, some of the stuff may be considered totally worthless. But that is not the point of this exercise.

This blog also does not dwell on where and how the items were bought. I frequent a few deal sites for information that lead to some of the purchases. The various auction sites are also a treasure trove to explore. But I would rather devote the blog to present the results - the items I obtained for a penny or less, in no particular order.

Ancient Chinese Coin - 2 of 2

This is a "Wu Zhu" and it should predate the "Kai Yuan Tong Bao".  So it can be even older, if it is real.

Ancient Chinese Coin - 1 of 2

The "Kai Yuan Tong Bao" was widely circulated in China for generations.  If this is authentic, it can be as old as 1300 years.  There is no simple answer to the authenticity of this coin.  It had been minted for hundreds of years by different authorities and mints.  And almost from day 1, there were unauthorized mints churning them out.  So it may be a faked one, which is made in recent history, or a real fake, which is an unauthorized production a thousand year old, or, if I am lucky, a real one.

Magnifier

It is made of glass.  I got 7 or 8 of them for 1 cent each shipped.  This is the one I kept for my own use.

Small Handmade Beaded Charm - 3 of 3

This is a cat.

Small Handmade Beaded Charm - 2 of 3

This is a turtle.

Small Handmade Beaded Charm - 1 of 3

This is a cock.

Rainbow Resin Heart

A small plastic piece for crafting.

Retractable Stylus Pen

It is small and can be attached to cell phones etc.

Laptop Keyboard Cover

I have not tried this myself.  It is supposed to protect the keyboard from dust and spill.  I am not sure how well it works, whether it affects typing, how it looks, etc.  Paid one cent for it.

Screen Protector for iPhone 3GS - Mirror

This is a film to be applied on the iPhone screen for protection against scratch.  It can act as a mirror when the screen is off.  It lets the light through when the screen is on.  1 cent a piece delivered.

Hair Extension Tool Kit

Nothing came in today.  So I am showing things from the past.  This is a tool kit used for extending hair - a procedure to hot glue hair to the end of real hair and make it longer, I think.  One cent shipped for the whole set.

Carved Pendant - "Agate"

This is also from earlier.  I am quite happy with this 1 cent purchase, even though I cannot be certain it is made out of agate.  I had to ask the seller what it depicts.  Here is the answer: "This is a cock.  It represents happiness, long life and prosperity".  I would have never guessed that.

Audio Adapter for Headset/Earphone - 2.5mm to 3.5mm

Price is one penny.  It connects a regular audio headset to most cell phones.  This works on my cell phone but not very well, perhaps due to the particular size and shape of the prong.  The connection is often lost.  I use a different one (also bought for 1 cent) which works great.

Thai Coin - 1 Baht

I got this coin from Thailand a while back for 1 cent shipped.  The denomination is 1 Baht and it was minted in Thai year 2550 (year 2007 A.D.) according to my research.  Today's exchange rate for Thai Baht (THB) is 1 USD = 31.0700 THB.

Jewelry Findings - "Silver Plated" Charms

These just came in.  They are advertised as silver plated charms.  I cannot vouch for the "silver" part.  Nor can I tell what kind of stone they have.  Price is 1 cent each delivered.

Hard Back Cover for iPhone 3GS - Another Kind

They look yucky to me.  I couldn't even bring myself to give them away.  Price is 1 cent for all three.  They were gotten a while back.

Hard Back Cover for iPhone 3GS

I got some more of these today, 1 cent each shipped.  I have had them before, including the one in the header shot.  In general it is not easy to get iPhone cover/cases at this price.  But for some reason I have better luck with this kind.  I don't really know why.  They look cool to me.  Each design in this lot is different from the others.
LOL I don't even own an iPhone.  It is fun to pass them out to my friends who do.

A Paper Cut - Free

I photographed the cookie jar for a blog post yesterday.  The box gave me a slight paper cut on the back of my hand today, almost as retribution.  I was trying to put it away.  An obligatory picture is not forthcoming.

A Penny for a Penny

That's right!  I bought those pennies on the right for a penny each, delivered to my door steps.  This is harder to do than you would think.  It was incredible how many people gladly paid more than 1 cent to buy a penny.
They are log cabin pennies minted in 2009, sold as collectable items, and came with the little protective coin holders.  Being not proof grade, however, they are not that special.
I like coins and I don't have an Indian head penny.  Now if only I can get it for 1 cent...  Believe me I have tried.

Cookie Jar - Used

I rarely go for used items in the hunt.  But I don't often see such a thing to come up at this price.  And I was curious to see if I can claim it.  Low and behold I bought the jar.  Considering the weight, this is easily the heaviest object I bought for a cent so far.
Now that the deal was closed, I realized I didn't really have a use for it.  Trying not to further burden the seller with the shipping cost, I proposed to just cancel the transaction.  The seller ignored my proposal.  So here it is, a cookie jar still sitting in its packing materials, months after I received it.  When I get a chance I will try to freecycle it.
This was the first time I suggested to cancel a 1 cent deal.  It had happened one more time later.  I won an auction for a 3-piece wash towel set someone selling to benefit a charity.  I did not have the heart to take it for 1 cent so I said just keep the towels and let's forget it.  The seller agreed that time.  Since I did not actually get the towel set, it did not make the list here.

Loose Beads (8mm round) - "Black Agate Onyx"

These did not come by easy either but I managed to get a few at the price of 1 cent per strand.  It is not a necklace - no chain came with it.  Beads are tied up in a piece of fishing line.
I am no gemologist so I cannot tell if they are in fact "Black Agate Onyx" beads as advertised.  I am doubtful.  The material does have a heavy and glassy feel.

Moisture Meter - Free

Cost is zero.  I won this in a writing contest about water conservation.  It is the kind you can stick into your flower pot and see if it needs water.

4 Unused Stamps with Face Value of 1 Cent

Sometimes, things that ought to be easier to get proved otherwise.  This is one of those.  After many fail attempts I snagged this strip of 4 Tiffany Lamp stamps for 1 cent shipped.  This is the one and only I got, even though, at 4 cents, its actual value is lower than many other items I got.

White Imitation Pearl Necklace

Fresh from the mail.  It is rather short.  But it is a necklace, not loose beads like what I got in some other deals.  Cost is $0.01 including shipping.

Neck Tie - Red with Heart Patterns

Total cost is $0.01 including shipping.  Comparing to some of the other ties I got earlier, this is not as nice.  It is 100% polyester.  But it will do as another piece to my collection.

European Style Glass Bead - One of Many

I bought many of these in various styles for 1 cent each shipped.  They are one of my regular purchases.  Some of them I have fashioned into necklace and bracelets.
Despite the name struck on the rim of the core, I have a hard time believing it is a genuine Pandora bead.  It is still pretty and I like these beads.

Clear Glass Bottle/Vial with Cork - Style 2

This is a different style - shorter and wider than the other one.  But the volume is still 1ml.  The price was a whopping 12 for 1 cent.  It is cute and all but I have yet to find a way to use them (Edit: I did use some of them to hold small gem stones later).

Clear Glass Bottle/Vial with Cork - Style 1

This is one of the 2 styles I bought.  The volume is 1ml.  I paid 1 cent for 3 of these.  The deal has been replicated later.

Mini Bluetooth 2.0 Adapter Dongle

I had seen this sold for a dollar or more.  It had been pretty hard to get in my early attempts.  Then suddenly the supply opened up and I was able to get many of these, for one cent each shipped.  I stopped buying them after getting 20 or so.

As of 11:31:11 Monday, February 14, 2011 EST, these 1 cent auctions with free shipping are expiring left and right on eBay.  Any one can get it easily.  Sellers include:
