What exactly can a penny buy these days? This is a question often asked. Google the question and you will find a few answers. Not much, apparently, according to most. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when I actually set out to make purchases for one cent. This blog documents the various items I scored for a penny or less.

What qualifies a purchase as a penny loot? The cost of anything mentioned in this blog includes the purchase price, tax, shipping and handling fee, if any. If a rebate is involved, the postage to mail it is part of the cost. If a coupon is bought and used in the deal, that figures into the total as well. And the total cost must be equal to or less than US$0.01. The item must also be procured from a source available to the public - "My aunt gave me a sweater" doesn't count.

Some costs are not included in the one cent total. Chief among them is the time and effort to hunt for and complete the deals. Gas and mileage is not counted if a trip to the store is required. Computer and office equipment amortization, paper and ink expenditures are all excluded.

As expected, quite a few of the items I bought came from China. Depending on your tastes and needs, some of the stuff may be considered totally worthless. But that is not the point of this exercise.

This blog also does not dwell on where and how the items were bought. I frequent a few deal sites for information that lead to some of the purchases. The various auction sites are also a treasure trove to explore. But I would rather devote the blog to present the results - the items I obtained for a penny or less, in no particular order.

Green T-Shirt - Bucks

This arrived together with the white one.  Also 1 cent shipped.  Size is medium.  Material is 50% cotton and 50% polyester.

White T-Shirt - Arizona

1 cent shipped.  Size is XL.  Material is 50% cotton and 50% polyester.  This arrived together with the green one.

Clear Glass Bottle/Vial with Cap

Making a glorious return are the miniature bottles, just in time to break the drought.  These came with caps instead of corks.  Total cost is a penny for all three of them.

Metal Spacer Beads - 12 mm in Diameter

These are cheaper than the fancier ones.  I paid 1 cent for the bag of 12.

Metal Spacer Beads - 10 mm in Diameter

These have also been gotten quite a while ago, so much so that I don't remember the price. I think they are 1 cent for 2 at the most.
They look better than those smooth ones.

Necklace with "Jade" Pendant

Nothing in the mail again, probably a side effect of the Chinese New Year.  So back to my stash one more time.

At one cent each, I got a handful of these.  I will be surprised if the pendants are real jade because there is a wide range of colors here.  The chains are short.  And I used 2 of the chains to make a necklace with the 1 cent beads.

The seller also gave me free gifts for these 1 penny purchases:

Faravahar Pendant - Ancient Persian Symbol

These are the slow days.  So here is a blast from the past - this is a pendant depicting Faravahar (or Farohar) - one of the best-known symbols of Zoroastrianism, the state religion of ancient Iran, according to Wikipedia.  I got this for 1 cent shipped to me via regular air mail.  A similar item is listed on Amazon for an inflated price of $35 plus $4.49 shipping.

Auction Watch

I have added an "Auction Watch" section on the right side of the blog.  It lists some of the ongoing or completed auctions that may end at a low selling price.  Often times, these sellers sell at a loss to build a reputation.  So if you win an item please be courteous and take a moment to leave honest feedback.

Another thing to be aware of is that many of these items are from China.  And it normally takes 1 to 3 weeks for them to get to the US.

Disclaimer: I am not related to any of the sellers in the list.  This is just a random collection of the auctions I ran into.  There is no attempt at completeness.  And accuracy is not guaranteed.  Updates are made only if my schedule allows.

A Farewell to the Beads

I got a shipment of the glass beads.  Sadly, this is probably the last of the big bead purchases.  I got most of them from a particular group of sellers.  They have recently wised up and stopped selling me more, probably because I bought too many at the 1 cent a piece price.  So for the time being the supply has dried up.  Too bad, these are one of my favorites.
This shipment contains some duplicates as well as some repeats of what I had before.
I built a few larger pieces from these 1-cent beads.  Being a not very crafty person they are sort of lame, I admit.
The above is a bracelet fashioned from some beads and a piece of elastic band.
The above is another bracelet with beads and 2 pieces of old ball chains.

And the last one is a necklace with the beads and 2 metal beaded chains.  The chains came with some other 1 cent necklaces.

A Penny for a Wheat Penny

A wheat penny, year 1918, of unknown mint, arrived in the mail also.  I paid 1 cent for it.  As far as wheat penny goes this one is not a valuable piece.  So it is probably worth just a few cents, about the same as those Lincoln Log Cabin Pennies, I believe.

Created Green Emerald - 0.02 Carat

I bought 4 of them for 1 cent each.  They came with a shipping list.  They are, as the seller described, truly "very very tiny".
Due to their small size (at 1.5 mm by 1.5 mm, per the seller) and the fact that they are not natual, market value for an individual stone should be well under a dollar.  But they seem to be nicely cut to shape.
At least I found a use for one of the small bottles.

HDMI Cables - 6 Feet

My day job is killing me and I have not been able to post for a while.  In the mean time, the mailman has not been very busy but I did get a few things that are worth mentioning, including these cables.

I got a total of 6 of these for 1 cent a piece shipped.  And I think I could have gotten a few more if I wanted to.  Maybe one of these days I will have a need for them.  I am still using the CRT's and DTV converters...

Here is the specification for the technically inclined:
- Gold plated connectors
- HDMI 1.3
- Supports 480i, 480, 480p, 720, 1080i, 1080p resolution
- Dolby TruHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream capable
- Connector: HDMI male to HDMI male
- Length: 6 ft / 1.8 M

Another Audio Adapter for Headset/Earphone - 2.5mm to 3.5mm

This one works better for me than the other.  It is the piece attached to the cell phone.  I can now use a regular audio headset (with grey wire in the picture) with the cell phone, mostly for listening to radio.  I got a few of them for a penny each.

Kapton Tape - 0.2 Inch by 100 Feet per Roll

This is a kind of industrial-used tape that can hold up in very high temperature.  Each roll shipped to me for 1 penny.

Kid's Watch - One of a Dozen

A somewhat crazy deal, also from the past.  It wasn't easy but I managed to get a dozen of such items at the price of a penny each shipped.  They all bear different designs of Hello Kitty.

It is hard for me to strap one of these on.  I cannot imagine how a kid can put it on the wrist.  The watch is a low end item for sure.  But the value should exceed 1 cent.

Cellphone Charm - One of Many

I got this in the past.  The material is plastic or some kind of resin.  Certainly worth more than a penny in my opinion.

Fish Shaped Cable Winder - Silicon

This can be used to manage the cables of audio headset etc.  It was bought a few months ago.  Not as useful as I thought.

Slide Charm - Letters

These are charms that can slide on bracelets or small pet collars etc.  One cent each shipped to me last week.

Audio Headset - In-Ear Headphones

I got just 2 of these in the past.  It came with 2 spare pairs of ear gel.  The quality is terrible.  The one I already opened went bad within a week - no sound on one side.  That was one cent not very well spent.

MP3/MP4 Player Stand

The piece on the right folds out like a lounge chair so you can set the player on it at the desired angle.  The piece on the left is a wire winder clip.  One cent shipped.  It was bought a few months back.

Stamps Galore

I like stamps.  They take me around the world and back in history.  I went on a buying spree last week.  The result is the largest 1 cent deal in dollar amount I have reached so far.  I spent an astronomical sum of $1.90 for 190 individual items.  Most of them were valued at 20 cents each by the original owner.  Here are a few that were valued higher:
This is from Poland.  They were obviously loved and well cared for.  All came with nice protective holders.  The price is 1 cent for each holder and its contents.
This is an Australian import.  I like the seller very much and have been a customer a few times.  But there was a glitch this time around.  The seller did not pay enough postage to ship the stamps, and the post office charged me $1.85 due to insufficient postage.  That would have prevented me from showing these stamps here as it would have made the cost more than 1 penny each.  But the nice seller agreed to repay me $2 to make up for the postage so here they are, finally made the list.
This one is from Barbados.  But the value on the holder may or may not be accurate.  I am not a serious stamp collector so I don't know enough to evaluate them.

Here is one more from Australia that is valued higher.

The seller even gave me a few freebies.  Did I say the seller is nice?
Two Romanian stamps for free.  Thank you.

The following ones are low value but are pretty or interesting in the eyes of a layman (meaning me.)
From then Czechoslovakia.

 From South Africa.
This period piece from Poland depicts the tie between Poland and the USSR at the time.

Reds Hooded Sweatshirt - Brand New - Large Size

How did this land on my laps?  I should thank my lucky stars.  Even though I got it a few months ago, it is still one of the best values I bought for 1 cent, mailed to me.  It should worth more than those diamonds(soon to be described.)  The brand is Majestic.
However, I personally have no use for it.  The size is not right.  I am not a Reds fan.  And I don't like the polyester material.  I am waiting to donate it out.

USB 2.0 Cable - Sandard Type A Male and Mini-B 5-pin Male

For a while they were easy to get and I bought a bunch of them.  Most are about 3 feet long.  I use them to connect cameras and external hard drives to my PC.  They can also be used to charge cell phones and GPS units.

Silly Bandz - Pack of 12

I just got this today.  It is a set of religious symbols, 2 of each pattern for a total of 12.  One cent for the whole pack shipped.  This one did not come by easy, probably because these shaped elastic bands are popular among kids.

Small Gift Bag - Gold Tone

These came in yesterday, complete with a shipping list.  A penny each shipped.  It is for gift bagging small items such as jewelry.

Powder Puff

This came in today - powder puff for applying makeup.
