What exactly can a penny buy these days? This is a question often asked. Google the question and you will find a few answers. Not much, apparently, according to most. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when I actually set out to make purchases for one cent. This blog documents the various items I scored for a penny or less.

What qualifies a purchase as a penny loot? The cost of anything mentioned in this blog includes the purchase price, tax, shipping and handling fee, if any. If a rebate is involved, the postage to mail it is part of the cost. If a coupon is bought and used in the deal, that figures into the total as well. And the total cost must be equal to or less than US$0.01. The item must also be procured from a source available to the public - "My aunt gave me a sweater" doesn't count.

Some costs are not included in the one cent total. Chief among them is the time and effort to hunt for and complete the deals. Gas and mileage is not counted if a trip to the store is required. Computer and office equipment amortization, paper and ink expenditures are all excluded.

As expected, quite a few of the items I bought came from China. Depending on your tastes and needs, some of the stuff may be considered totally worthless. But that is not the point of this exercise.

This blog also does not dwell on where and how the items were bought. I frequent a few deal sites for information that lead to some of the purchases. The various auction sites are also a treasure trove to explore. But I would rather devote the blog to present the results - the items I obtained for a penny or less, in no particular order.

Silver Plated Charm - Encore

One cent each.  Just more of the same.

Headphone - 3.5mm

One cent a piece.  I hope these have better quality than an earlier one.

Mesh Bag/Pouch

Another penny spent on this.

A Penny for a Nickel

One cent shipped.  This has a bit of a story.  I wanted to photograph what I bought so I specifically requested the seller to mail me the actual nickel she was selling.  Well that did not happen and she just sent me 5 cents via PayPal, the same way she delivered to other buyers.  When I inquired, she promised to resend in snail mail once I give her back the 5 cents in PayPal.  So I check my PayPal account but found that I got no money at all.  The 5 cents from the seller was swallowed whole to pay for the fees.
So, I had paid 1 cent for nothing.  That was not a good deal at all.  I wanted to just refuse the transaction but did not find a way to do that in PayPal.  So I did a refund.  But instead of coughing up the fee, PayPal charged me 5 cents for it.  Now I was 0.05 dollar in the hole.  That is ridiculous.  I had to call PayPal to have this straighten out.
Then a few days later, the nickel finally made it to my mailbox, duck taped to a postcard.
As you see, from a time and energy stand point, this deal, like many others, is not worthwhile.  But as I mentioned, that is not the point of this exercise.  My goal is simply finding out what I can buy with a penny.

Plastic Headband for Children - Mickey Mouse

One cent each.

Silicone Wristband with Watch

It is claimed to produce negative ions that have all kind of health benefit.  Pretty far fetch.

Bamboo Spatula

It is bigger than I expected and it seems pretty sturdy.

Pouch for Phone or MP3/4 Player

One cent each.  They came in a few different designs, as seen below.

Skin for Apple iPod Shuffle 1GB

The cost was 1 cent shipped.

Nintendo DS Skin

I paid a penny for this silicon skin of a Nintendo DS.

Game Case for Nintendo

Appologies for the long lapse, loyal readers.  I am having trouble at work so the fun stuff suffers too.  In the mean time, the penny purchases coming in the mail are starting to pile up on the floor and becoming an unsightly mess.  So here is an effort to catch up.
The above is a case for a single Nintendo Advance game.  It cost me a penny.

The above is a case for a single Nintendo DS/DSi game.  It cost me a penny.
The above is a case for 16 Nintendo DS/DSi games.  It cost me a penny.

The above is a case for 6 Nintendo DS/DSi games.  It cost me a penny and came with a bonus gift of head phone.

Temporary Tattoo

One cent for each sheet.

Wig Cap/Hair Net

I got too many of these.

Skull Cap - Rebel Flag Pattern

Price is 1 cent for 12 of them.  Too bad I don't know enough rednecks to give these out to.

Mickey Mouse Silk Scarf

Is it real silk?  I don't konw.

Plastic Head Band

Sigh.  Too little time to do the fun stuff.  1 cent purchase keeps coming in and mail is piling up.  Yet I don't get a chance to photograph them and write about them.
Here is an item I received before my most recent stoppage.

Wrist Strap for iPod Nano 6G - Silicon

These go for a couple of dollars elsewhere and I got them for a penny each.
To sweeten the deal, the seller added the following items for each wrist band:

An in-ear audio headset and 2 pieces of screen protector for the Nano plus a cleaning cloth.

Hanging Charm - Another One

This is from the same source as those Rhinestone Charms.

Lithuanian Coin - 1 litas

This is a coin from Lithuania - A country I have never been to but probably will visit one day.  I got close in a trip to Tallinn, Estonia, another small Baltic state that was once part of the Soviet Union.  It is a beautiful place.
The year is 2010.  The dimension is 1 Litas.  Today's exchange rate for Lithuanian Litas (LTL) is 1 USD = 2.4705 LTL.
This coin commemorates the Battle of Grunwald/Zalgiris.  It was fought on 15 July 1410 and the Polish–Lithuanian force defeated the Teutonic Knights, according to Wikipedia.  The battle became a great source of pride for the two victors.

The stamps on the envelope make great additions to my collection.  I did not have any stamps from Lithuania prior to this.  I have gotten a few nice exotic stamps from some of the sellers of 1 cent deals.  That's icing on the cake!

Stainless Steel Keyring

One cent for each pair.
These have keyboard and mouse pendants.
These have heart shape pendants.

Crystal Beads - Loose

35 pieces loose beads.  Clear.  8mm in diameter.  1 cent for the strand.

Stamps Again

I did not get a chance to post for a while.  In the mean time I got a few things that I can write about.  Another batch of stamps arrived.  I did not get as many as last time.  Here is one that should be very recognizable to people who are familiar with communist propagandas.
This was issued in 1948 for the Polish Working Class Congress.  The portrait of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin is front and center.  I paid 1 cent.

Cubic Zirconia Piece with 1mm Pre-drilled Hole

I paid 1 cent for the two tear shaped pieces above.  They are clear and weigh 13.5 carat each.

I paid 1 cent for the two heart shaped pieces above.  They are pink and weigh 9 carat each.

Pendant - "Picasso Jasper"

The material is described as Picasso jasper.  A search online convinced me that it is more likely made of unakite.  But again I am no expert.  Either way it is a great deal at 1 cent for all three.

Float for Bathing Infant

It is supposed to fit on the neck and help keep the baby's head above water.  There are 3 colored plastic balls inside the tube.  I am not sure what kind of safety test this thing went through.  Surely don't want to leave the baby alone when this is in use.

Dangle Charm with Pink Rhinestone - Letter "O"

The size of the hole should fit a pandora bracelet.

Cabinet or Drawer Knob

I got one each.  So I paid a total of 2 cents.  A screw came with each in the bag.  Since I am not likely to use them, I did not open the bags and the pictures are fuzzy.
Gatehouse brand 1 1/8" Black Colonial style.  A better picture can be seen here.

Belwith brand South Seas Conch style.  A better picture can be seen here.

Rhinestone Charm - Slide or Hanging

I got some more of these in addition to the letter charms.
A star, a flower, and a Christmas tree.  One cent each.
A paw print, an & sign, and a different star.  One cent each.

European Style Glass Bead - Another One

Yes, I am still getting these occasionally.  It is from a different seller than those who stopped selling me.  It is also smaller but maybe better crafted.
